CLIVE, Iowa — After watching a jackpot climb higher and higher, a Cedar Rapids woman decided to take her shot — and ended up winning a $365,780 prize she's now splitting with her three nephews.
"It's surreal," Deb Allick said Monday, holding back tears, as she and her nephews claimed the prize at the lottery's main office in Clive.
Allick won a jackpot prize in the Iowa Lottery's Super 7s Progressive" InstaPlay game. The jackpot starts at $50,000 and increases with each ticket sold statewide until it's won. It had been growing for nearly five months before Allick's win.
"I had seen that it was getting larger and larger and I said, 'It's getting close,'" said Allick, who bought her winning ticket at Maverik, 3132 First Ave. NE in Cedar Rapids. "I said, 'It hasn't hit yet. I want one ticket.'"
She checked the ticket when she got back to her car, and disbelief gave way to amazement as she realized she'd won the progressive jackpot.
"I'm going 'No! No! No!' You're almost in shock," Allick said. "You maybe wish to hope you get a $5,000 ticket, a $10,000 or $30,000 — maybe one of those larger ones — but all those consecutive numbers were just kind of breathtaking."
Allick said she immediately knew she wanted to share the prize with her nephews — Nathan Allick, Adam Allick and Chris Allick, all of Cedar Rapids — and met up with them right away.
"We were all in shock," Nathan said. "There weren't a lot of words coming out of her mouth. It was unclear at the time whether it was a good thing that happened or a bad thing that happened. Once we determined it was a good thing, we had a nice celebratory dinner."
InstaPlay combines features of scratch and lotto games. Tickets are printed on demand from lottery terminals rather than being pre-printed, and are sometimes called "scratchless" because there is no security coating to remove.
InstaPlay games range in price from $1 to $30. For more information, visit www.ialottery.com.
